Welcome to “Sound in German Comics”

As the name of this blog suggests, we will be looking at the representation of sound in German comics. How have German comics artists historically represented speech in their works? What kinds of sounds effects have been used, and how are they incorporated into the rest of the image–if at all? How do comics artists go beyond the approximation of sound and into a more complete translation of sound into image? What even are “comics?” My answers to these questions, by no means exhaustive, are presented in the different modules of this website.
A note on reading the different modules: the order in which each page appears in the menu above indicates the progression of my arguments and observations, but each can be read on its own and in any order.
